My Epic Goechala Trek: Chasing Kanchenjunga’s Shadow

My Goechala Trek: The Himalayan Adventure That Changed Me

Ever caught yourself staring at a photo of a snow-capped peak, wondering what it’s like to stand there? That was me, daydreaming about Kanchenjunga, the third-highest mountain on the planet. In May 2025, I finally made it happen, lacing up my boots in Yuksom, Sikkim, for the 90 km Goechala Trek. This wasn’t just a hike—it was a journey through blooming rhododendron forests, wide alpine meadows, and glassy glacial lakes, all leading to the jaw-dropping Goechala Pass at 15,100 feet. Here’s my tale, from muddy trails to moments that still give me chills.

My Goechala Trek Story

Day-by-Day Breakdown

Yuksom to Sachen: The first day was like stepping into a fairy tale. I wandered through misty forests, birds chirping like they were welcoming me. At 7,200 feet, my legs felt the altitude, but my heart was already hooked on Sikkim’s wild vibes.

Sachen to Tshoka to Dzongri: These days were a total feast for the eyes. I trekked through jungles of rhododendrons—red, pink, and white flowers popping everywhere. At Phedang, I plopped down at a tiny teahouse, sipping scalding tea and laughing with other trekkers about sore feet. Then, at Dzongri Top (13,670 feet), I saw Kanchenjunga for the first time. I swear, my jaw hit the ground. That view was worth every step. (Big props to Indiahikes, Black Yak Expeditions, trekinsikkim.in, Bikat Adventures, Trek The Himalayas, Moxtain, and Far Out Trek for their killer tips on this stretch.)

Rest Day at Dzongri: Acclimatization day was no snooze-fest. I took a quick hike to Dzongri La, where the morning sun lit up the peaks like they were on fire. Samiti Lake nearby was unreal—its glassy surface mirroring the mountains like a postcard I wanted to jump into.

Dzongri to Thansing to Lamuney: Waking up to sunrise over Kokchurang’s meadows felt like a gift. The grasslands shimmered, and I couldn’t stop grinning as I walked, feeling like I was part of something bigger.

Summit Day: This was the moment I’d been chasing. I set out in the pitch-black pre-dawn, stumbling over rocky moraines, my breath puffing in the cold. When I reached Goechala Pass and saw the first rays of light hit Kanchenjunga’s snowy face, I nearly cried. It was like the mountain was glowing just for me. (Sikkimtourism.gov.in, Trek The Himalayas, and Moxtain had the best advice for crushing this day.)

Back to Yuksom: Heading down through pine-scented forests was bittersweet. I dragged my feet, not ready to leave. By the time Yuksom’s rooftops came into view, I felt full—like I’d found a piece of myself in those mountains.

Gear and Tips for Your Trek

Tricks I Learned the Hard Way

  • Get in shape: I spent 8–10 weeks hiking hills and doing cardio to prep. Trust me, it’s worth it.
  • Poles are your pals: My trekking poles saved me on those high-altitude descents.
  • Start early: Kick off summit day at 5 AM to dodge sketchy afternoon weather. (Trek The Himalayas tipped me off on this one.)

How to Stay Safe

  • Take it slow: Rest at Dzongri to let your body adjust to the thin air.
  • Watch for AMS: Know the signs of altitude sickness and when to turn back.
  • Pack a med kit: I carried a first-aid kit and checked with my doc about Diamox.
  • Pick a solid crew: A good trek operator is like a safety net.

When to Go

  • Spring (April–May): The rhododendrons are like a flower explosion, and the skies are crystal clear. (TrekNomads, Far Out Trek, and mohitbangari.com can’t get enough of this season.)
  • Autumn (Sept–Nov): Cool air, sharp views—perfect for snapping pics.
  • Avoid monsoon (June–mid-Sept): Mudslides and fog are no fun. (Far Out Trek saved me from a rainy mistake.)

What to Bring & Where to Gawk

Packing list:

  • Layers (base, fleece, waterproof jacket for those surprise showers)
  • Toasty sleeping bag with a liner for chilly nights
  • Waterproof boots that grip like a champ
  • Trekking poles and UV sunglasses (the sun’s no joke up there)
  • Water purifier and snacks like nuts and chocolate
  • A small repair kit and a headlamp for those early starts

Must-see spots: Samiti Lake’s mirror-like glow, Dzongri’s epic summit views, Thansing’s rolling green meadows, and the mind-blowing panorama at Goechala Pass.
