Bhrigu Lake Trek: A Himalayan Gem Near Manali

My Trip to Bhrigu Lake – A Hidden Treasure in the Mountains

Bhrigu Lake Trek

Bhrigu Lake Trek in the Kullu Valley is like finding a secret spot that takes your breath away. Picture green fields, big mountains, and a calm lake with an old story behind it. I did this trek recently, and it was one of the best weekends ever! It’s perfect for anyone who loves nature or wants a quick adventure from Manali. Here’s how it went for me, plus some easy tips for you to plan your own trip.

My Bhrigu Lake Story

Day 1: Gulaba – Where It All Started

Trekking to Bhrigu Lake Himachal

I kicked off the trek from Gulaba, a small village just 20 km from Manali. The air was so fresh, with that pine-tree smell that makes you feel alive. Walking through forests full of tall oak trees and bright flowers was like stepping into a postcard. After a while, the trees disappeared, and I was surrounded by wide, green meadows. Honestly, I kept stopping just to soak it all in—it was that beautiful.

Day 2: The Climb to Bhrigu Lake

Snow at Bhrigu Lake

The next day was a bit tougher. The soft grass turned into rocky paths as we went higher up. I heard little animals making funny noises, and there was snow here and there. By noon, I finally saw Bhrigu Lake, sitting at about 14,100 feet. The water was so still, with snowy mountains all around, shining under the sky. It felt like a place where you just want to sit quietly and forget everything else.

Why the Lake Feels Special

They say a wise man named Bhrigu used to meditate here ages ago. Locals believe the lake never freezes completely, even in super cold winters. When I stood there, it felt peaceful, like the place was telling me its old secrets. I don’t know how to explain it, but it was special.

Why This Trek Is Awesome

  • Height: About 14,100 feet (4,300 meters)
  • Time: Takes 3–4 days
  • Difficulty: Not too hard, good for people new to trekking
  • What You See: Green fields, a pretty lake, and big mountains like Hanuman Tibba and Deo Tibba
  • Who Should Go: Beginners, people who love clicking photos, or anyone wanting some peace

What to Pack

Here’s what I carried, and it worked well:

  • Good trekking shoes that cover your ankles and don’t let water in
  • 2–3 T-shirts and pants that dry quickly
  • A warm jacket and another one to block the wind
  • Woolen cap, gloves, and sunglasses (the sun is strong up there)
  • Sunscreen, lip balm, and a small first-aid kit with basics
  • A torch and a power bank for your phone
  • A water bottle (1–2 liters) and snacks like almonds or energy bars

Best Time to Visit

Go between mid-May and October:

  • May–June: Everything’s green, and the weather’s nice
  • July–August: It’s misty and rainy, so be careful
  • September–October: Clear skies and colorful trees

Don’t try this trek from November to April because the snow makes it tough to walk.

How to Stay Safe

  • Chill in Manali for a day to get used to the high altitude
  • Keep drinking water and don’t rush—take it easy
  • Skip trekking if it’s raining a lot; the paths get slippery
  • Watch out for headaches or feeling sick—that could be altitude sickness
  • Go with a local guide or a trekking group. They know the way and keep you safe

The Trek Plan

  • Day 1: Go from Manali to Gulaba, then trek to Rola Kholi and sleep in a tent
  • Day 2: Walk from Rola Kholi to Bhrigu Lake and back to the camp
  • Day 3: Trek back from Rola Kholi to Gulaba, then head to Manali

Tips for Your Trip

  • How to Get There: Catch a Volvo bus from Delhi or Chandigarh to Manali. From Manali, take a taxi to Gulaba.
  • Where to Stay: You can camp at Rola Kholi or book with a trekking company that sets up tents and food.
  • Permits: No permits needed if you’re Indian.
  • Cost: I spent around ₹4,000–₹7,000 planning it myself. It might cost more if you go with a trekking group.
